Getting Started with Your Clock

Whether your new clock is destined for the wall, mantel, bedside table or office, a few simple steps will help you get it set up correctly and looking its best.

This guide covers the basics of battery installation, setting the time, mounting, care and troubleshooting.

Before You Set Up Your Clock

Before installing a battery or mounting your clock:

Check the clock for any visible damage from transit.
Remove all packaging and protective materials.
Check the product instructions for model-specific information.
Keep the packaging until you are satisfied that the clock is working correctly.

Battery Information

Battery requirements vary between clock models. Many battery-powered clocks use standard AA or AAA batteries, while some digital and specialist models use other battery types or external power. Always use the battery type specified for your particular clock.

When replacing batteries:

Use fresh, good-quality batteries of the specified type.
Check the + and − polarity before inserting the battery.
Do not mix old and new batteries or different battery types or brands.
Remove batteries if the clock will be stored for an extended period.

Setting the Time

For analogue clocks, set the hands carefully using the method recommended by the manufacturer. Avoid forcing the hands or applying pressure directly to the dial. Some movements can be damaged if the hands are moved incorrectly.

If your clock has specific instructions for setting the time, follow those instructions rather than relying on a general procedure.

Installing a Wall Clock

Before mounting your clock, consider both its position and the wall itself.

Choose a location where the dial can be easily seen.
Avoid areas exposed to excessive moisture or extreme temperatures.
Consider direct sunlight, which may affect some finishes over time.
Check the clock’s weight before selecting your wall fixing.
Use fixings appropriate for your specific wall type and follow the manufacturer’s mounting instructions.
Make sure the clock is securely supported before leaving it unattended.

For heavier clocks or uncertain wall conditions, professional installation may be appropriate.

Troubleshooting

My Clock Isn’t Keeping Time

Check the clock’s power source. If it uses a battery, replace it with a fresh battery of the correct type; if it uses USB or mains power, check the connection.
For battery-powered clocks, check that the battery is inserted with the correct polarity.
For analogue clocks, make sure the hands aren’t touching one another, the dial or the glass.
Reset the time using the method in the product instructions.

The Clock Hands Aren’t Moving or Are Misaligned

If your clock is battery-powered, remove the battery before checking the hands. Make sure they sit freely and aren’t touching each other, the dial or the glass. Don’t force or bend the hands. The correct adjustment method varies between movements, so check the manufacturer’s instructions or contact us before attempting further adjustments.

Caring for Your Clock

A little regular care will help keep your clock looking its best.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals. Don’t spray cleaning products directly onto the clock.
Keep moisture away from the movement and electrical components.
Take particular care with painted, metallic and timber finishes.
Replace batteries when required rather than leaving depleted batteries inside the clock.
